For centuries physics was dominated by Newtonian mechanics and the thought that if one could somehow know the kinematic vector quantities of all particles in space they could thus predict the outcome of the entire system. But ideas and experiments such as General Relativity, Schrodinger's Cat, The double slit experiment, and Quantum Theory are just a few of the discoveries in modern physics that have only lead paradoxes.
The Double Slit Experiment showed us that light acts as both a particle AND a wave
Schrodinger's Cat tells us that something can be many things at once but can only be definitively confirmed when actually observed
And Quantum Theory tells us at the sub-atomic level, things are merely probability.

Such ideas are mind-bending, and just plain scary to some.
"The violent reaction on the recent development of modern physics can only be understood when one realizes that here the foundations of physics have started moving; and that this motion has caused the feeling that the ground would be cut from science"
-Werner Heisenberg
"All my attempts to adapt the theoretical foundation of physics to this [new type of] knowledge failed completely. It was as if the ground had been pulled out from under one, with no firm foundation to be seen anywhere, upon which one could have built"
-Albert Einstein
